Monte
was in Fairfield Thursday and Friday and had a great time on three different fishing trips. Two on Lake Fairfield and one on Richland Chambers. The first trip was to Lake Fairfield late Thursday night with the Rock. We netted up some perch and some shad and anchored off in our favorite Redfish cove (location classified) but could only catch catfish. That was fine with us but it made us wonder if the two species don't get along. We caught 4 or 5 then decided to head in for some shut eye due to an early start the next day.
We got in bed around 2:00am and got right back up at 6:00am. It wasn't easy either but we had to prove to our friend David that we weren't wimps. We picked him up around 6:15 and the three of us headed for Richland Chambers for some hybrid action. We trolled our usually great honey holes on the 309 flats but we only managed a few dink sandies. That's when Roy decided to check out a spot where we suspect the guides
have been having good luck (location classified). We fished there a while slabbing 2oz prune pickers without much luck then, sure enough, guides Royce and Adam Simmons show up. Royce throws out a marker and lands a 9 pound hybrid on his first cast. He chatted with us a while then he was off to the next spot. That's when I landed a 4 pounder. Right after that Roy hooked into one that was absolutely abusing him. The pole was doubled over and the drag was screaming. The fight lasted about a full minute or so then the monster spit the hook. Wish we could have seen it. After lunch at Fisherman's Point we dropped off Dave and took a much needed nap during the heat of the day.
Around 8:30pm we headed back to our redfish cove on Lake Fairfield. No more than fifteen minutes on our spot Roy hooked up with a 32 inch long Redfish. The funny part is that it tangled with another line from another boat and was landed there instead of our boat so that was his second big fish he failed to land that day. We had no action for about an hour when BAM! Monte's line takes off with a 10 1/2 pound red on the other end.
Man that was some kind of fun! Another hour of nothing and WHAM! Roy's line takes off. This was another bigun but the monster was smart, real smart wraping up every line in the water then heading right under the boat and for the third time in one day Roy lost yet another big fish. Monte landed an eight pounder an hour later then Roy finally put one in the boat, a 6 1/2 pounder. After that we called it quits, we were whipped. We figure they would have hit like that all night, around one an hour. Can't wait to go back. Dave and Roy, lets do it again asap.
