Summer Camp '98 Troop Summer Camp '98 220 enjoyed 1998 summer camp at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. It is located on the shores of Lake Bridgeport just out side Bridgeport, Texas. The fire ants were everywhere! If you stood still for more than a minute they would get you. We arrived Monday morning, June 1st and got settled in and had a great day.

However, that night we got covered up with the fire ants as we slept (or tried to). Tuesday morning found Monte acquiring the camp sprayer along with the camp fire ant poison. I didn't think all that much about there not being a smell to it while we sprayed. We all got covered up with fire ants Tuesday night too! Needless to say I was pretty upset about the "environmentally safe" spray I was issued. It wasn't all that safe for Troop 220! I bought some of the good stuff at a Bridgeport feed store and sprayed the camp again which ended our fire ant problem.

That didn't necessarily mean we received a good nights sleep on Wednesday, though. A pretty good thunderstorm came calling that night. The lightning was fierce and the thunder sounded dreadfull. But the wind wasn't too bad and everyone was dry in their tents. Around 2:00 AM some dolt comes into our camp screaming there is a tornado comming and to get to shelter immediatley (about 1/4 mile away). Once we got there, soaking wet, we were turned back to our campsite due to a "false alarm". The alarmist was never found.

Believe it or not, however, we all had alot of fun. We got to water ski, shoot 22 rifles, skeet shoot with shotguns, swim, canoe, and earn several merit badges. Even the fire ants are kind of funny now that its over.
