Monte Monte's 14.1 Pound Fairfield Redfish - Click here for a better viewfished Lake Fairfield again with Roy Hudman last weekend. We didn't catch very many but Monte caught a whopper Redfish weighing in at 14.1 pounds. Only two other fish were caught on this trip, a pretty good sized catfish and a 4.5 pound redfish.

We had intended to do some night fishing Saturday night but when did we go? Right in the heat of the day! And it was hot! We had a very difficult time keeping our core temp under control. It Roy with a Nice One - Click here for a better viewdidn't take long before we had consumed all of the water we had so our trip was rather short, about three hours. We set up in our favorite redfish honey hole again with two poles each, one with shrimp the other with live perch. Unlike last time there wasn't instant activity, we sat there wondering if we needed to move for a while. Then Monte's balloon went under and the fight was on with a good sized catfish. She was back in the water before we thought to weigh her. A little while later Roy's pole bent over double in the rod holder. Fish On! That was a 4.5 pound redfish which was also thrown back.

The highlight of the trip was to come last. As we began thinking about Catfish - Click here for a better viewpacking it in and yielding to the unrelenting heat Monte's balloon went under. The beast immediately signaled its unwillingness to have anything to do with us and stripped drag toward open water. Roy was informed of the emormity of the monster attempting to pull Monte into the water. Then she turned toward the boat so fast it felt like she spit the hook. Monte dejectedly reeled in the slack line only to find the incredible fish still hooked but now the behemoth was really freaked out to discover she had come right to her enemy. Monte held on for dear life as this "Thing" stripped line again, only this time faster, meaner and more frightening. The challenging battle went on for ten minutes before the trophy was in the boat. Every line in the water was tangled, she tried every trick in the book to free herself but to no avail. Pictures Monte took a shot of these Talapia getting cleaned as he passed by getting the truck to load the boat - Click here for a better viewwere quickly snapped then she was returned to the murky depths... wiser.

The heat was so oppressive that we had to leave shortly after that. We could only speculate how good the fishing would have been the night before with the moon waxing toward full and all. Our next opportunity is in a couple of weeks and we have agreed to actually make it out on a night trip. Can't wait!
